Applications of N-methylaniline

2020/12/17

N-Methylaniline is a fine chemical product of wide application, used principally to raise the octane number of gasoline and in organic synthesis, and also serving as a solvent. It is further used in the manufacture of pesticides, dyes, dye intermediates, rubber auxiliaries and stabilizers for explosives, and may likewise function as a solvent, an acid acceptor and an intermediate for organic synthesis. In the dye industry, it is used in the production of Cationic Brilliant Red FG, Cationic Pink B, Reactive Yellow Brown KGR and so on.

1. Gasoline Antiknock Agents
Gasoline antiknock agents constitute a class of fuel additives capable of raising the octane number of gasoline and of preventing or mitigating knocking, and as such they are extensively applied in gasoline. At present, antiknock agents may be broadly classified into two categories: metallic antiknock agents, such as alkyl lead compounds, manganese-based agents (e.g., methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl) and iron-based agents (e.g., ferrocene), together with rare-earth metal compounds; and non-metallic antiknock agents, such as alcohols, phenols, ethers, aromatic amines, carboxylic acid esters and their various polymers, which, owing to the comparatively large dosages required, are generally regarded as high-octane blending components for gasoline. N-methylaniline is an organic amine compound, delivering favorable antiknock performance: it broadens the ignition limit range of the air-fuel mixture and enhances ignition reliability, thereby effectively raising the octane number of gasoline.

2. Application in Pesticides
In the pesticide sector, N-methylaniline is used domestically mainly for the production of the insecticide buprofezin (also known as Pushiling or Daoshijing), a new type highly selective insecticide exhibiting high activity against nymphs. Insects coming into contact with the agent die during the molting stage; although the recommended dosage does not kill adults, it reduces oviposition and prevents egg hatching, thereby substantially diminishing progeny. The product is safe to natural enemies of pests and to flower-visiting insects, and presents no cross-resistance issues with other classes of insecticides—characteristics that have driven the rapid growth of buprofezin production. N-methylaniline is applyed in the synthesis of herbicides and fungicides abroad. Methylmethiuron, a pesticide developed by Showa Denko of Japan, is used for the control of sedges and Kyllinga brevifolia in turf and dryland fields, with very low toxicity to useful plants. Schering AG of West Germany developed the novel pesticide anilofos-type herbicidal urea (phenylphthalide urea), applied as a herbicide in dryland fields and gardens and particularly suited to pre-emergence use across a wide range of plants. Schering AG also developed the herbicide Kuoyening (broadleaf herbicide), used primarily for weed control and also as a pre-emergence herbicide for peanuts, cotton and soybeans. In addition, Monsanto, Bayer of West Germany and other companies have developed further herbicide types based on N-Methylaniline.

3. Application in Dyes
In the dye industry, N-methylaniline is used principally in the manufacture of intermediates and cationic dyes.
(1) Used in the production of dye intermediates: The principal dye intermediates produced from N-methylaniline include N-methyl-N-phenylaniline and N-methyl-N-hydroxyethylaniline. N-Methyl-N-benzylaniline is used to produce Cationic Red X-GRL (Colour Index, cf. C.I. Basic Red 46), a dark red powder with a compatibility value of 3.5, applied in the printing and dyeing of acrylic fibers and their blends and also in the dyeing of modified acrylic and polyester fibers. N-Methyl-N-hydroxyethylaniline is used to produce Cationic Blue X-GRRL (Colour Index, cf. C.I. Basic Blue 41), a blue-green powder with a compatibility value of 3.5, applied in the dyeing of acrylic fibers and their blends.
(2) Used in the production of cationic dyes: Dyes produced directly from N-Methylaniline include Cationic Brilliant Red SGN (Colour Index, cf. C.I. Basic Red 14), a dark red powder with a compatibility value of 3.5; Cationic Pink FG (Colour Index C.I. Basic Red 13), a dark red powder with a compatibility value of 4; Cationic Pink B (Colour Index, cf. C.I. Basic Red 27); and Reactive Yellow Brown KGR. These dyes are used mainly in the printing and dyeing of acrylic fibers and their blends, and may also be applied to the dyeing of modified acrylic, polyester and polyvinyl chloride fibers and to the printing of acetate fibers.
